What’s the deal with cracking and splitting?
The nature of wood slices is that they are dynamic evolving temperamental fragile items.
They are constantly drying out; depending on the species each slice will behave differently.
As the slice dries out different parts of the slice dry at different rates, the shrinking from drying in the slice is not uniform, this difference creates a tension in the wood slice causing cracks.
In smaller slices the wood integrity is stronger making it more resistant to cracking during the drying process. The larger slices tend to be more susceptible to cracking as the wood strength integrity reduces as the slices diameter grows.
The way to prevent cracking is to prevent drying of the slices.
This is achieved through storing them in a sealed container or plastic bag. You can spray with vinegar to help prevent mould growth.
Also sealing the surfaces of the wood slices to prevent it from drying out is an effective way to prevent cracking.
You can Seal the wood with coating of Epoxy, polyurethane, varnish, or lacquer.
Another method is to dry them out v e r y slowly and gradually.
Using a wood oil can also help preserve the wood slices and reduce cracking as the oil reduces dying out.
